History & Evolution of The Point Resort
Dandridge, Tennessee, about 30 miles east of Knoxville, is the second oldest town in the state and is steeped in tradition. Nestled near the foothills of The Great Smoky Mountains, Dandridge rests above and below Douglas Lake. Dandridge is the only town in the United States to bear the name of our country’s first lady, Martha Dandridge Custis Washington. Settled in 1783, Dandridge is a town of natural beauty and history. Many of the historic homes are still standing, several of them occupied by businesses in the downtown area. The entire downtown district of Dandridge is listed on the National Historic Register.
The Point Resort is across the lake from the downtown district of Dandridge. Driving through downtown Dandridge, The Point Resort is accessed by traversing one of the areas most scenic bridges and entering the Resort’s private drive. This property originally was owned and farmed by Michael Branner in the 1800’s. In the 1840’s the Branner family sold the property and in 1942, James E. Swann, an heir of the Swann Estate sold it to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), who decided to dam the French Broad River and create Douglas Lake. In 1944, the TVA leased the property to the Town of Dandridge with the stipulation that it be solely used for public recreation. Over the years, various people have leased the property for different uses. George Zirkle built a restaurant with a small dock in 1945, S.T. Galloway created Galloway Landing in 1962 and Opal McCartney ran a marina with cabins from 1966 until 2002.
In 2002, under the direction of Mayor David Jones and the Board of Alderman, the Town of Dandridge sought developers to create plans for a marina complex featuring a fine dining restaurant. In 2003, four local businessmen formed “The Point Development Group”, setting out to make the dream a reality on this property and the shores of Douglas Lake. Today, The Point Resort consists of a full service marina with fuel docks, dry stack boat storage, a magnificent restaurant with breathtaking views and superb lodging and lake suite facilities.
